Banished from Ephyra, Bellerophon finds refuge with the king of Argos. The king of Argos, not wanting to kill this unfortunate youth who sought refuge with him, sends him to the king of Lycia. The Lycian king also does not wish to kill this pitiful youth and sends him to fight the Chimera, a lion-headed, goat-bodied, serpent-tailed, and fire-breathing monster that dwells on Mount Olympus. Bellerophon rides on his winged horse Pegasus and goes to fight the Chimera. When the Chimera attacks, Pegasus takes flight, and Bellerophontes stabs the monster with his spear, burying it seven stories underground. But the Chimera continues to shoot flames from seven stories below the ground. According to the legend, which has been passed down in Anatolia for thousands of years and was thus transmitted to us by Homer, the still-burning flame is the flame of the Chimera emanating from the seven stories underground.
